Sylvia Earle is a pioneering oceanographer, marine biologist, and explorer whose work has shaped global understanding of the ocean for more than five decades.
Often referred to as “Her Deepness,” Sylvia has led over 100 expeditions, logged more than 7,000 hours underwater, and played a central role in advancing deep-sea exploration, marine science, and ocean advocacy. She is the founder of Mission Blue, a global initiative working to protect the ocean through the creation of marine protected areas known as Hope Spots.
Throughout her career, Sylvia has served as Chief Scientist of NOAA, held academic positions at leading institutions, and advised governments and international organizations on ocean policy and conservation. Her work bridges science, exploration, and public engagement, emphasizing the ocean’s critical role in sustaining life on Earth.
Sylvia is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, the author of numerous books, and the recipient of more than 100 national and international honors for her contributions to science and conservation. Her lifelong mission is clear: to inspire protection of the ocean through knowledge, connection, and action.
