John Bohorquez is an interdisciplinary marine conservation scientist and conservation finance practitioner working at the intersection of ocean science, economics, and sustainable finance.
He is the founding director of the Blue Economy Solutions Lab, advancing innovative financial solutions for marine protected areas, coral reef conservation, fisheries sustainability, and climate resilience. He also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Stony Brook University’s School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences.
Through his research and advisory work, John supports UN agencies, universities, NGOs, foundations, and global initiatives in designing finance mechanisms that strengthen ocean protection while aligning economic systems with conservation goals.
His collaborations include developing MPA finance facilities with the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, advancing the One Ocean Finance Facility with the UN Capital Development Fund, coordinating international coral reef conservation initiatives, and contributing to global marine protected area finance research with the Blue Nature Alliance.
