Jamie Craggs is a pioneering coral scientist whose work has changed what the world thought was possible for reef restoration. As Principal Curator of Aquariums and Living Collections at the Horniman Museum & Gardens in London, Jamie spent more than a decade pushing the boundaries of coral biology—leading to one of the first successful predictable broadcast-spawning events of corals in a fully closed aquarium system. What began as experimental curiosity evolved into Project Coral, a program that sparked a global shift in how researchers, aquariums, and conservation groups approach coral reproduction.
Jamie’s innovations helped launch new collaborations across continents, including Coral Spawning International, SECORE International, Tropical Marine Centre (BioCSL), and MARS Sustainable Solutions’ Building Coral program. His work bridges science, engineering, and storytelling, showing how controlled coral spawning can supercharge restoration and support reefs facing accelerating climate threats. From lab breakthroughs to field projects documented with Canon and Nature Seychelles, Jamie’s mission has remained the same: unlock the reproductive potential of corals to give reefs a fighting chance.
Today, Jamie continues to mentor, connect, and inspire a global community of practitioners who are transforming restoration from small trials into scalable solutions. His vision is clear—reproduction is the engine of reef recovery, and empowering people with the tools to harness it will shape the future of coral conservation.
